Whatis the difference between 22 short and 22 long? The short is shorter, has less powder, and travels slower. The 22 Long Rifle has pretty much replaced the Long. It has the case of a Long, but a heavier bullet, and more powder.
In1871, a longer version of the .22 Short was developed. It was called the .22 Long. The longer case gave more room for powder which resulted in an additional 100 feet per second equating to around ~65 foot-pounds of force at the muzzle. This made it as popular as the .22 Short and to this day, some ammo companies occasionally do limited runs
Infact, the .22 long POI was about two inches above the .22LR, and the .22 short impacted about two inches above the .22 long. Thelong had the same ballistics as the .22 short but some .22's would function better with a long than a short and since both rounds shared the same 29 grain bullet and powder charge the long had quite a following for a long time.
The.22 Short, on the other hand, has a long and honorable history, a continuing record of usefulness, and displays what I can only call heretofore unsuspected virtues. It was the first American self-contained cartridge, introduced in 1857, preceded in Europe by Flobert’s .22 BB Cap in 1845.
Today CCI loads their .22 S Target ammunition to a muzzle velocity of 830 fps for rapid fire pistol competition. “The .22 S is a pretty anemic round and in 1871 a longer case of the same diameter was developed for the 29-grain Short bullet. This became the .22 L cartridge, still occasionally seen, but obsolescent, today.
